By: Kasey Salamie Southland Vikings Contributor. The Southland Vikings will take on the Will County Crackerjacks tomorrow at 7 PM. The game will take place at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. The field looked pristine in the Viking’s home opener on Tuesday night and the atmosphere was great. The Vikings (5-3) and 3-2 in Midwest Collegiate play look to build on their most recent 10-0 win on Tuesday night. They played a game that is perfect to build from because they had success in the most important areas of the game. They had timely hitting, spectacular defense, and great pitching. The Crackerjacks (6-4) look to get some revenge against the Vikings after they were handed a 10-0 loss against Southland. The Crackerjacks are currently on a three game losing streak going into Friday night’s affair. Viking’s coach Chris Cunningham will send crafty right-hander Brandon Duplessis to the hill on Friday night. Duplessis (1-0) had a great year at South Suburban College. He had a record of 4-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 73 innings pitched for SSC. In his first start of the season against the Rockford Foresters Duplessis was nearly unhittable. He had seven strikeouts in nine innings, while only allowing two hits. In that start Duplessis did not give an earned run in his complete game. Duplessis baffled Rockford hitters. Duplessis looks to do a lot of the same things in this next start against the Will County Crackerjacks. “My strategy is to get ahead of hitters and keep them off balance. Tomorrow night I’m going to trust my catcher and throw what the catcher calls. I did that in my last start against Rockford and I had a lot of success,” said Duplessis. I asked Duplessis about his best pitch, the slider. “I learned my slider just by messing around with my curve ball and trying different grips. It has lead to a lot of my success.” The slider is clearly Brandon’s nastiest pitch. He is comfortable with throwing it at any point in the count. Viking’s left fielder Mike Kane has seven hits in last seven plate appearances with four doubles and a homerun. Kane is really seeing the ball well right now. James Dawson has been piling up clutch hits in the last two games. Elliot Armstrong will look to continue doing his job as the leadoff hitter by getting on base and scoring runs. The Vikings have a great line-up 1-9. Every game will have its different heroes. It should be an exciting match-up between the Midwest Collegiate League’s top two teams on Friday night.
