For a league that is known for high scoring contests, the Midwest Collegiate League All-Star Game was just the opposite. The South Division All-Stars pulled out a 3-2 victory over the North Division All-Stars at Benedictine Stadium on Wednesday, July 11. Southland Vikings’ first baseman Chris Stevens was named MVP after going 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Stevens was one of eight Vikings named to the All-Star roster and he and his teammate, Alec Ornelas proved to be the best of the best at the plate. Ornelas also had two hits and an RBI. Cody Dykema of the Northwest Indiana Oilmen also had a nice day at plate, going 1 for 3 with one run scored and one RBI.

Will County’s Ben Gullo started the game and picked up the win for the South Division All-Stars. He pitched one inning, giving up zero hits and zero earned runs while striking out one. In fact, nine pitchers on the South Division team did not give up a run.

For the North Division All-Stars, Brendan Delany of the DuPage County Hounds picked up the loss, giving up two earned runs on three hits in one inning of work. Offensively, the Chicago Zephyrs’ Josh Camalick went 2 for 2 with one RBI while Brent Turner of the DeKalb County Liners was 1 for 4 with one RBI.

The second half of the season began Friday. The playoffs will begin on July 31st with the MCL Championship series scheduled to begin on August 3rd.
