After having lost four of their last five games, the Northwest Indiana Oilmen got back in the win column on Tuesday evening in a game that came down to the wire. Tuesday’s contest featured a variety of bullpen arms, a full moon, and an Oilmen comeback victory

The Oilmen defeated the Griffith Generals at Oil City Stadium 6-5, keeping the Oilmen in second place in the Northern League. Tuesday’s win was made by a big eighth inning, and five different arms taking the mound. Carlos Canelon started the game, going three innings, striking out four, and allowing one run. It was Aaron Buckholtz who delivered in the ninth, picking up the save and striking out Billy Jones with the tying run at third.

Offensively, things were quiet up until the eighth. After a three-run blast from Bryce Vorwald in the top of the eighth, the Generals took a 5-4 lead with two outs, and were on the verge of sending the Oilmen to third place.

“Josh Cunniff came up with a big two-strike hit, and it was really nice to see,” Oilmen Manager Adam Enright said. “It was also good to see Jayden Comia get a hit in the eighth, both of those guys have struggled quite a bit in the home stretch of the regular season, so for them to come through was great.”

Comia and Cunniff both hit RBI singles in the eighth, giving the Oilmen the 6-5 lead. Cunniff went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Comia 1-for-4 with an RBI. The Oilmen totaled just five hits, but found success late to cling on for a home victory.

Looking ahead, the Oilmen will now officially host the Southland Vikings in the first round of the postseason. Despite the Oilmen’s 4-8 record since the All-Star Break, they are still second place in the league, and can prepare for their matchup.

“The Vikings are really good, they have two of the best pitchers in the league who I am certain we will see,” Enright said. “There will certainly be no looking past the Vikings next round.”

The Oilmen will play their last two regular season games before the postseason at Oil City Stadium. The Oilmen host the Lake County Corn Dogs on Wednesday, August 2nd for a 7:10 p.m. start time.
