BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Southland Vikings forced a winner-take-all Game 3 for the Midwest Collegiate League Championship with a 1-0 victory against the Bloomington Bobcats.
Tyler Kenjic (Purdue Northwest/Hobart, Ind.) hit into RBI groundout in the top of the ninth, which scored Grant Mullin (Eureka/Chicago, Ill.) from third that proved to be the only run of the game and only one needed as the Vikings took Game 2, 1-0, Monday.
It was a pitchers duel from start to finish. Kevin Glynn (South Suburban/Chicago, Ill.), Vikings starter was nearly unhittable, going all nine for the complete game shutout, allowing only one hit, issuing two walks and striking out six. Dalton Hottle (Lewis/Monmouth, Ill.), Bobcats starter, took the tough luck loss for Bloomington, going eight innings, allowed an unearned run which came in the ninth, only allowing one hit, issuing one walk and struck out eight.
Zach Frey (Heartland CC/Normal, Ill.) singled in the bottom of the first with one out, but was held there as Vikings got the last two outs. Jeff Peisker started off the third inning with a double to left and was stranded there as the Bobcats got the next three batters out.
With the score being 0-0 going into the ninth inning, Mullin walked to start the frame, Joe Curci grounded out to move him over. Jalen Davis (Chicago, Ill./Beliot) reached on an error which moved Mullin over to third. Kenjic, then came up and grounded out right back to the pitcher which scored Mullin and gave the Vikings the 1-0 lead.
Glynn pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and sealed the victory for the Vikings to force a Game 3.
Game 3 is scheduled for tomorrow evening as the Bobcats and Vikings play at Hap Bruno Field, with game time scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
