Chicago, Ill.-June 16- The Minutemen dropped their third straight loss after five days of not playing.
The MCL Minutemen (3-7) got the day off this past Saturday when they were scheduled to take on the Northwest Indiana Oilmen. This gave the team almost a week of rest before they would take on the Chicago American Giants (6-3) tonight for the fifth time this year where they lost 11-1.
The American Giants laid it on thick in the beginning, coming out with an early three run lead to end the first inning. By the end of the fourth inning, they were up 8-0. The Minutemen got many batters on base, and even loaded them up multiple times. They grabbed their only run late in the sixth inning. Jorge Santos (South Suburban/ Homewood, Ill.) hit a ground ball to center field for a single. After a ground out from Alphonzo Franks (Southeastern Illinois/ Munster, Ind.), Santos would advance to second. Gavin Callaghan (Joliet JC/ Tinley Park, Ill.) poked a double into right field to score Santos. The Minutemen wouldn’t score after that, as the game ended after the top of the seventh.
Manager Deandre Gilmore was not impressed by what he saw after having a couple days off.
“It was a bad game with bad energy. We reverted back to what we were doing a week ago,” he said, “I thought the five days would be good for us to have fresh legs and have high energy, but we ended up taking those couple of days off and they worked against us.”
On the bright side, The team got a player back for his Minutemen debut. Zack Beatty (McBook CC/ Maple Park, Ill.) started at first base for the team in tonight’s game. The 6’6 first basemen made lots of great contact, and Gilmore was pleased with his efforts in his first game in a Minutemen uniform.
“It was good. Zack is a guy that can hit. He was in the Northwoods League and we were just waiting for him to get back. He’s a guy that’s going to be playing every single day,” Gilmore said.
The Minutemen will travel to Whiting, Indiana tomorrow to take on the Northwest Indiana Oilmen at Oil City Stadium for the first time this season at 7:10 pm.
