The City of Whiting Indiana will be hosting the 2011 Midwest Collegiate League All-Star Game at their new Oil City Stadium at Standard Diamonds Park 1700 119th Street on July 13th at 7:05 PM. Don Popravak, Commissioner of the League states that “we are extremely thankful to Mayor Joe Stahura and his staff for all of their hard work and planning to create a memorable All-Star Game as well as allowing our league to showcase their beautiful new stadium in downtown Whiting, Indiana.”
The 2011 All-Star event on Wednesday July 13th will open its doors at 4:30 PM so fans can take in batting practice and enjoy pre game festivities at the family friendly atmosphere of Oil City Stadium. Celebrity Guest and Master of Ceremonies for the event will be former Chicago White Sox player and American League “Rookie of The Year” Ron Kittle. Kittle a Gary Indiana Native will be on hand to meet the fans and participate in the All-Star activities. The National Anthem will be performed by Whiting Native Gerica Arroyo.
The League is also partnering with the ALS Association Greater Chicago Chapter for the event with their “Step Up To The Plate” campaign to fight Lou Gehrig’s disease. All tickets are $8 General Admission tickets with $2 dollars from each ticket sold being donated to the ALS Association Greater Chicago Chapter.
The Midwest Collegiate League’s All-Star Players and Coaches will be wearing Red T-Shirts for their pre All-Star workouts on Tuesday July 12th and prior to the All-Star Game itself on July 13th. Each shirt will be Red, the official color of ALS, and each will be adorned with the number 4 to honor Lou Gehrig whose name is synonymous with ALS. Gehrig wore the number as a player for the New York Yankees and the Midwest Collegiate League wants to honor his memory.
