Chicago, Ill. – June 19, 2023 – The Northern League has announced this week’s award winners, as Ethan Lengfelder (Missouri Valley, Iowa / Bethel) of the Elkhart County Miracle was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week, and Hayden Matulich (San Jose, Calif. / Purdue Northwest) of the Lake County Corn Dogs was tabbed Player of the Week. Both honorees took the awards with unanimous votes.
Lengfelder threw a no-hitter against first-place Lake County on June 15, yielding one earned run while striking out three and walking three in the nine-inning complete game. He becomes the first repeat honoree this season as he also won the league’s Pitcher of the Week award on June 6. Lengfelder threw just the fifth no-hitter in league history and only the second that was a full nine-inning game. He tossed the third individual no-hitter in league history and first since 2014 as the two most recent no-hitters were combined efforts.
Matulich posted a .568 batting average with nine RBIs, two triples, a double, a home run and seven runs scored this week. He rounded out his slash line with a .667 on-base percentage and 1.154 slugging percentage. The home run was a walk-off job in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday night to beat the Indiana Panthers 1-0 on a night where all three games in the Northern League ended on walkoffs.
The league will continue to announce its weekly award winners on Monday or Tuesday each week throughout the season.
