Chicago, Ill. – May 23, 2021 – The number of former Midwest Collegiate League players to reach the game’s highest level continued to grow on Sunday afternoon.
Former Lexington Snipes infielder Owen Miller was called up to the big leagues and made his Major League debut for the Cleveland Indians during Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.
Miller becomes the fifth MCL alum to play in the big leagues, joining Kevin Kaczmarski (New York Mets), Tony Cingrani (Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers), MLB All-Star Paul DeJong (St. Louis Cardinals) and Corey Ray (Milwaukee Brewers). Miller is the second former MCL Player to make his big-league debut this season, joining Ray.
Miller, who was selected in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres out of Illinois State University, owned a .406 batting average at Triple-A Columbus before being called up to the show. He was acquired by the Indians in the August 2020 deal that sent Mike Clevinger to the Padres.
Miller posted a .333 batting average with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 28 games with the 2015 Lexington Snipes under manager Billy DuBois. Miller is one of 89 former MCL players who have gone on to play professional baseball.
