Chicago, Ill. – Aug. 3, 2020 – Two outstanding performances led to lopsided votes in favor of the honorees in this week’s Midwest Collegiate League award balloting.

Northwest Indiana catcher Angelo Cantelo (Lewis / Blue Island, Ill.) was named the MCL Player of the Week, while Southland pitcher Clayton Bumsted (St. Xavier / Palos Heights, Ill.) garnered MCL Pitcher of the Week recognition.

Cantelo became the first player in the nine-year history of the Oilmen to hit for the cycle, doing so while recording six RBIs and four hits in a seven-inning, rain-shortened victory over the MCL Minutemen on Saturday. In addition to achieving the rare feat this week, the Oilmen catcher delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday to complete a come-from-behind victory over Southland.

Cantelo batted .409 (9-for-22) this week, driving in nine runs while notching five extra-base hits and scoring six runs over five games. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games and has hit safely in 21 of his 22 games this season. Thanks in part to Cantelo’s leadership, the Oilmen are riding a five-game winning streak and locked in a first-place tie in the MCL standings. For the season, he owns a .352 average and .454 on-base percentage with eight doubles, two home runs and 22 RBIs over 22 games.

A new member of the Southland pitching staff, Bumsted impressed immediately, working 12 innings without allowing an earned run over two games this week. He issued three walks and struck out 11 while holding opponents to a .163 average. Bumsted did not allow an earned run over six innings in his debut vs. Joliet on Monday, then worked six shutout frames of two-hit ball to earn the victory and lift the Vikings over the Crestwood Panthers on Saturday.

The MCL will announce its next set of weekly awards on Monday, Aug. 10.
