Whiting, Ind. – August 10, 2023 – The Oilmen played the Lake County Corn Dogs at Legacy Fields Thursday night in game one of the Championship series. Carlos Canelon would etch himself into Oilmen history tying Matt Lelito’s single-game strikeout record of 14.
Carlos Canelon was the star of the Oilmen’s 9-2 win over the Lake County Corndogs. Canelon went 8 1/3 innings. He allowed just two runs on three hits. The big story for Canelon was his big night in the strikeout column. Canelon notched 14 strikeouts which tied a single-game Oilmen record set by Matt Leltio in 2022.
“Canelon’s performance was just really electric,” manager Adam Enright said. “From the seventh inning on we had someone ready in the bullpen, but he just kept looking better and accumulated a lot of punchouts in the late innings.”
Everything was going the Oilmen’s way in the big game one win. Randy Seymour and Angelo Cantelo launched back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning which sparked a five-run fifth. Angelo Cantelo would add to his first homerun recording two in the game. In total eight Oilmen tallied a hit and six tallied multi-hit games.
“It’s good to see Seymour continue to hit well going into the fall,” Enright said. “Same thing with Cantelo, just getting him at-bats and having some success before his fall season.”
The Oilmen take a big game one in the Championship series against the Corndogs. The Oilmen will head home to Oil City Stadium Friday night to try and win the Championship for the first time since 2018. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
