Chicago, Ill. – July 9, 2018 – The Midwest Collegiate League has announced its weekly award winners for the week of July 1-8, and this week’s honorees have a strong Bloomington Bobcat flavor.
Quinn Gudaitis (Illinois Wesleyan / Arlington Heights, Ill.) was named the MCL Pitcher of the Week, while a monster week by Billy Mote (Heartland CC / Bloomington, Ill.) helped him capture MCL Player of the Week accolades in a competitive field of nominees.
Gudaitis heaved a complete-game shutout against the Northwest Indiana Oilmen on Sunday in a seven-inning contest that opened up a doubleheader at Oil City Stadium. Gudaitis scattered five hits and two walks while raking up eight strikeouts to pick up the win and improve to 2-4. He owns a 3.19 ERA in 31 innings this season.
Mote was a key cog for Bloomington this week as the fourth-place Bobcats gained ground in the MCL standings by stringing together a four-game winning streak, all against teams in front of them. Mote went 10-for-18 (.556) while slugging two home runs and driving in seven.
This marked the first time this season that one team swept both weekly awards in the same week. Bloomington now has three total weekly honors on the season.
Mote and Gudaitis will both partake in the 2018 MCL All-Star Game, which will take place on Saturday night at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind. The game is slated to get underway at 7:10 p.m., pitting the MCL East All-Stars against the MCL West All-Stars. Tickets are available now on NWIOilmen.com for the showcase of the league’s brightest stars. For those who cannot attend, the game will air on the Oilmen Broadcasting Network via Facebook Live with Oilmen play-by-play broadcaster Brandon Vickrey and former MCL All-Star Andrew Lowe on the call.
